Commissioned to execute work at the New York Times’ new headquarters, Island Diversified applied a 4-coat, integrally-colored, polished and waxed Marmorino plaster to create a bold and memorable treatment for the building’s main entry lobby. In addition to providing a highly energetic greeting for visitors to the building, the bright, multi-hued Marmorino also serves as a dramatic backdrop to the intriguing installation Moveable Type by artists Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin. The piece is mounted prominently in the main lobby and features an array of 560 vacuum-fluorescent display screens, all using natural-language processing algorithms to constantly parse and display random bits of daily output of the historic paper (news, features, editorials) and the archives, as well as the activity of visitors to NYTimes.com.
